Pneumonia

🫁 What is Pneumonia?

🌿 Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs.

The air sacs in the lungs become:

  • Swollen
  • Filled with fluid or pus

This makes it hard to breathe and get oxygen.

👉 Simple meaning:

Pneumonia = lung infection that affects breathing

🦠 What causes Pneumonia?

Pneumonia can be caused by:

Bacteria
Viruses (flu, COVID)
Fungi (rare)

It spreads through:

  • Coughing or sneezing
  • Close contact
  • Weak immune system

⚠️ Common Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • Fever
  • Cough (with or without phlegm)
  • Chest pain when breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fast breathing
  • Tiredness or weakness
  • Poor appetite

In elderly → may only show confusion or weakness.

👶 Who is at higher risk?

Higher risk groups:

Babies & young children
Elderly (>65 years)
Diabetes patients
Asthma/COPD patients
Smokers
Weak immune system

👉 These groups may get severe pneumonia faster.

Go to clinic or hospital immediately if:

Difficulty breathing
Fast breathing
Chest pain
Oxygen low
Fever > 3 days
Cannot eat or drink
Child very sleepy
Elderly confused

These are danger signs.

 How is Pneumonia treated?

Treatment depends on the cause:

Viral supportive care
Rest & hydration
Fever medicine
Nebulizer/inhaler if needed
Oxygen or admission if severe

👉 Early treatment prevents complications.

💉 How to Prevent Pneumonia?

👉 Prevention is better than cure.
