DENGUE FEVER

 



🦟 What is Dengue?

🌿 Dengue is a viral infection spread by mosquito bites, especially the Aedes mosquito.

It is very common in tropical countries like Malaysia.

The mosquito bites an infected person → then spreads the virus to others.

👉 Simple meaning:

Dengue = fever caused by virus spread by mosquitoes

 

⚠️ Common Symptoms

Symptoms usually start 4–7 days after mosquito bite.

Common signs:

  • Sudden high fever
  • Severe headache
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • Muscle & joint pain (“breakbone fever”)
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Skin rash
  • Extreme tiredness

👉 Many people think it is just “normal fever”.

 

 

🚨 Warning Signs (Danger Signs) – Go to hospital FAST!

Dengue can suddenly become severe after day 3–5 of fever.

Seek medical care immediately if:

Severe abdominal pain
Persistent vomiting
Bleeding (nose, gums, black stool)
Very weak or sleepy
Cold hands/feet
Not drinking or passing urine
Platelet dropping

👉 These may be signs of Dengue Shock or internal bleeding.

 

💊 How is Dengue treated?

There is no specific cure for dengue virus.

Treatment is supportive:

Drink plenty of water (very important)
Oral rehydration salts
Paracetamol for fever
Rest
Blood test monitoring
Hospital admission if severe

Avoid NSAIDs like ibuprofen, diclofenac, aspirin (may increase bleeding risk)

 

🦟 How to Prevent Dengue?

Prevention is the BEST protection:

Remove stagnant water around house
Empty containers weekly
Use mosquito repellent
Wear long sleeves
Use mosquito nets/screens
Allow fogging if advised
Keep surroundings clean

👉 No mosquitoes = No dengue
