ASTHMA

What is Asthma?

🌿 Asthma is a long-term disease that affects the airways (breathing tubes) in the lungs.

In asthma:

  • Airways become narrow
  • Airways become swollen
  • More mucus (phlegm) is produced

This makes it hard to breathe.

👉 Simple meaning:

Asthma = breathing tubes become tight and blocked

⚠️ Common Symptoms

Symptoms may come and go.

Common signs:

  • Wheezing (whistling sound when breathing)
  • Cough, especially at night
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness
  • Easily tired after activity

Symptoms often worse at night or early morning.

🔎 What triggers Asthma? (Punca / Pencetus)

Asthma attacks can be triggered by:

Dust
✅ Smoke (cigarettes, haze)
Cold air
✅ Pollen or allergies
Pet fur
✅ Infection (flu/cold)
Exercise
✅ Strong smells or chemicals

👉 Triggers are different for each person.

💊 How is Asthma treated?

Asthma cannot be cured, but it can be well controlled.

2 main inhalers:

🔵 Reliever inhaler (blue)

  • For quick relief during attack
  • Opens airway fast
  • Use when breathless

🟤 Preventer inhaler (brown/others)

  • Use daily
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Prevents attacks

👉 Important: Preventer must be used EVERY DAY, even if you feel well.

🚨 When to see a doctor or go to emergency?

Seek help immediately if:

Very breathless
❌ Cannot speak full sentences
Lips/fingers turning blue
❌ Reliever inhaler not helping
Chest pulling in when breathing

 These are emergency signs.

How to control Asthma daily?

Avoid triggers
✔ Use inhaler correctly
Take preventer daily
✔ Keep inhaler with you
Exercise regularly
✔ Get flu vaccination
Regular clinic follow-up

👉 Good control = normal active life

🩺 Final Message

Asthma is manageable.

With proper treatment, children and adults can live a normal, active life.

Don’t ignore symptoms — control asthma early. ❤️
